Snapshot! Why You Need To Visit County Mayo, Ireland

Travel Loafers owned a home for many years in County Mayo.  So we know first hand the wild magnificence of the landscape which is unique.  Mayo is the third largest county in Ireland, with a wild and rocky Atlantic coastline studded with inlets and islands.

The Wild Atlantic Way runs along the Mayo coastline.  Part of the world’s longest defined coastal touring route, it’s inspiring, renewing, relaxing and invigorating.

Inland are numerous lakes and rivers and, in the northwest, the largest single expanse in the country. There is no other county in Ireland that can rival Mayo for its natural beauty and for the wealth and diversity of wildlife habitats found here.  Mountains, lakes, moorlands, sandy beaches, coastal cliffs, offshore islands, rivers, peatlands, turloughs, farmland, grasslands and limestone pavement, the wealth is truly remarkable.

Many castles dot the land, many in ruins, but others very well kept to this day.  Ashford Castle is one example of a castle that is in top-notch condition.   You can spend a few nights, have a round of golf, ride on horseback and much more while soaking up a little of Ireland’s rich history.

Mayo has traditional shops that can still be found throughout the county.  In larger towns of course, such as Castlebar, Ballina, Westport,  Claremorris and in smaller villages like the Neale, Ballinrobe, and Hollymount, to name a few. These shop fronts, fashioned out of exemplary craftsmanship, are an important and integral part of the built heritage of the county. It is these shop fronts which give each town and village much of their unique character, creating the enchanting character of Mayo’s towns and villages.

Ireland is breathtaking, and the true Irish experience can be found in the smaller towns and villages of County Mayo.
